    50% Chardonnay grapes from the Côte des Blancs and 50% Pinot Noir grapes from the Montagne de Reims, Laurent Perrier’s 2012 vintage Champagne really overdelivers on price. Bursting with lemon and lime, wrapped around fragrant white flowers, flaked almonds, and irresistible toasted brioche, this is so bright and lifted. We love the vibrant acidity on the palate which keeps the wine incredibly light on its feet. There is a wonderful intensity of mouthwatering fresh citrus fruit on the long finish, tinged with a pleasing salty edge. Incredibly pure in that unmistakable Laurent Perrier style.     A Laurent-Perrier Vintage is one of the Champagne world's safest bets. Therefore, there is no reason why the great 2012 should be anything but outstanding. It is a classic 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with the former originating in the Côte des Blancs communes of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Cramant and Chouilly, and the latter from Montagne de Reims's Bouzy, Aÿ, Verzy, Mailly and Rilly-la-Montagne. The nose is opening up beautifully, with sweet spicy tones and classy toasty whiffs complexing the radiant and intense fruit. A fruit salad in all its sweet nuances, but there are also some deeper and darker shades of aromatic wood and berries. Really intense on the palate, too, simply bursting with fruit. The texture is viscous, almost oily; due to the phenomenal concentration, it comes across almost winey. The mousse is soft. Despite the beautiful acid line and citric quality, the overall impression remains calm and mellow. This will take time beautifully.

Champagne, the world's greatest sparkling wine, needs little introduction - with imitations produced in virtually every country capable of growing grapes, including such unlikely candidates as India and China. The Champagne region, to the north of Paris, has the most northerly vineyards in France, with vines grown on slopes with a southerly exposure to maximise sunlight. The soil is chalky, providing an excellent balance of drainage and water retention. The key to the wine is in the cellar - the bubbles result from a second fermentation in the bottle and the rich toasty flavours in great Champagne come from extended bottle ageing on the yeasty lees. Until the eighteenth century, the wines produced in the Champagne area were light acidic white wines, with no hint of sparkle. However glass and closure technology developed at that time and it was not long before Dom Perignon, a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Hautvilliers, started experimenting with blends and produced the first recognisable champagne. In a world accustomed to still wines, the advent of champagne was almost a flop. It was saved when it became fashionable at the French court as a result of Louis XV's mistress Madame de Pompadour commenting "Champagne is the only wine that lets a woman remain beautiful after she has drunk it." And the rest is history, with famous (or infamous) champagne lovers including Casanova, Dumas, Wagner, Winston Churchill, James Bond and Coco Chanel.
