  • Goedhuis, December 2012

The most expressive and giving 1er Cru in the village and for many people the finest. As always this is a very open wine, with lots of broad dark berry fruit flavours. This wine coats the mouth with its natural richness and depth of flavours. A textured and very complex wine.

  • Burghound, January 2013, Score: 91-94

(from a .74 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines). A combination of oak and natural spice elements add considerable range to the cool red currant, plum and violet infused nose. There is excellent richness and power to the robust and tautly muscular big-bodied flavors that display a very firm minerality yet the supporting tannins are more refined than is typical with this wine. There is outstanding complexity and even in the context of the relatively forward 2011 vintage this is a wine that is clearly built to age. In a word, terrific. (91-94)/2021+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2013, Score: 17.5

100% new oak. He is lucky enough to have 0.75 ha.Quite rich on the nose – very pleasing. Lively rich fruit with a fine tension on the finish. Nothing forced. Very Vosne. Insistent and persistent. Drink 2020-2035

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
