  • Goedhuis, December 2012

An absolute joy, this is so graceful and fine, with stunningly pure soft raspberry fruit flavours. This wine, despite all its finesse and subtlety, has an extraordinary level of intensity. As a result it is surprisingly powerful. A very long and complete wine exuding class and its origins.

  • Burghound, January 2013, Score: 93-95

(from a tiny .18 ha parcel). A positively kaleidoscopic explosion of aromas with a heady scope ofspice and various red, blue and black fruit characters precedes the cool, pure and lacy middle weight flavors that possess superb detail and incredible finesse on the understated yet hugely persistent finish. This is one very classy effort and as good as the Malconsorts is, this is simply at another level. This isn’t an especially big or powerful effort but it is so beautifully focused that it comes across as very Zen. An exceptionally impressive effort. (93-95)/2021+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2013, Score: 18

100% new oak. 69-year-old vines. Hugely satisfying nose with real substance and perfume. Very intense. Very complete and well balanced. Some real delicacy. But great intensity too. Great purity. And lift. Still the sweetness of fruit but a bit more. Long. Drink 2020-2035

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Romanée Saint Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
