  • Goedhuis, December 2012

On the Vosne side of the town of Nuits St Georges this is a very fine 1er Cru indeed. A little reserved at the time of tasting, but it has noticeable weight and structure supported by red fruits and sweet chocolate vanilla-ed oak flavours. A wine with lots of potential.

  • Burghound, January 2013, Score: 89-91

(from a .43 ha parcel of vines planted in 1953). A relatively perfumed nose is airy and laudably pure with only a background touch of wood on the mix of red currant, red pinot and wild cherry aromas. The textured, intense and quite smooth middle weight flavors possess good phenolic maturity before culminating in an ever-so-mildly rustic finish that delivers excellent persistence. A Nuits of balance and harmony. (89-91)/2018+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2013, Score: 16.5

100% new oak. Vines 59 years old – same as their maker. Still sur lie. Slightly reduced. But lovely juicy lively fruit on the palate. Racy stuff with a little bit of stuffing. Drink 2016-2025

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
