  • Goedhuis, December 2011

Very intense dark berried aromas. This is a hugely concentrated wine focusing on subtle power. It is structured and broad, with characteristically grainy tannins. Layered and full, it stands alongside the very best Grand Crus of the vintage.

  • Neal Martin, January 2012, Score: 93-95

The Clos des Epeneaux has a very generous, pure bouquet of fresh strawberry, plum and a little cassis, always with the quasi-Tuscan richness that distinguishes it from the rest. The palate is very well structure, I think more "composed" compared to recent vintages with a dusky, almost broody finish that is enigmatic. Great matiere as usual here, real substance and very long in the mouth.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2014, Score: 94

Comte Armand’s 2010 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux kicks off the tasting in grand style. What can I say? The 2010 is a great example of the year. Layers of generous fruit are buffered by underlying veins of acidity and minerality in a wine that is already virtually impossible to resist. This is a fabulous showing from a wine that consistently overdelivers. Already, the room is buzzing.

  • Burghound, April 2012, Score: 92-95

The combined cuvées revealed an exceptionally fresh combination of pure and quite elegant red cherry and raspberry aromas liberally laced with warm earth and iron nuances. There is really lovely purity to the gorgeously well-detailed, intense and muscular medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract and a caressing mouth feel before terminating in a mouth coating and explosively long finish. This is relentlessly persistent with outstanding depth on the palate staining finish. Terrific. Drink: 2022+.Comments: outstanding!

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2012, Score: 17

Very rich nose. Lots of potential buried deep here. Clean and fresh and vital. Drink 2018-2030

Clos des Épeneaux is Pommard’s most celebrated climat. The 5.23 hectare monopole has been in the Comte Armand family since 1828. Paul Zinetti took over from Benjamin Leroux as régisseur in 2014, and is rising to every challenge at this small, characterful domaine. They also have small holdings in Volnay and Auxey Duresses and, while these wines have the distinctive character of quintessential Côte de Beaune, they are also some of the most sophisticated, nuanced expressions you might taste across these villages. An understated use of new oak matches the textured fruit, and gentle handling in combination with intuitive biodynamic practices afford these wines both strength and delicacy. The domaine has begun to noticeably outpace its neighbours and redefine how the finest terroir of Pommard is capable of not only power but elegance as well.Read less

Region

Pommard

A long popular appellation, Pommard is yet another exclusive red wine area which produces by far the most structured reds of the Côte de Beaune. It extracts rich body and long ageing potential from the limestone/iron-rich clay soil. Some examples can be markedly rustic, yet as time has passed and winemaking know-how has improved, Pommard's wines are becoming softer and more approachable when young. Its vines cover 317 hectares of which over a third are premier cru vineyards. Several have pronounced following and even one, Les Rugiens, is being pushed to become a grand cru.
