  • Goedhuis, February 2023

2009 is a stellar vintage in the Cape and one of Marc Kent, founder of Boekenhoutskloof’s all-time favourites. Glistening gold in colour, the 2009 is amazingly complex offering up swirls of fresh lemon, dried orange peel, jasmine, orange blossom and sandalwood. Semillon’s telltale notes of fresh wax and hazelnut complement the bouquet. The palate is pure silk, carried by a thread of bright acidity that will allow this to continue to age with ease. An incredibly versatile food fellow, we love the salty preserved lemon and bergamot notes on the long finish. Drink 2023-2035.

  • Neal Martin, December 2022, Score: 94

The 2009 Semillon is feisty on the nose, with touches of lanolin and white pepper. Hints of beeswax surface with time. The palate has a beautiful texture and fine depth, waxy and very phenolic with a persistent finish. This is almost in the same class as the splendid 2006 and still has plenty in the tank. Drink 2022-2042.

  • James Suckling, December 2022, Score: 92

A complex nose of grilled lemon, hazelnut and garden herbs. Medium-bodied with silky texture. Complex and nutty with steady balance. Supple. Drink or hold.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2022, Score: 17.5

Pale gold. Smoky, stony, a touch herbal. A subtle and attractive flintiness. Cedar and quince. Tight, very fresh, with pure citrus Sémillon character, deliciously textured, starting to show the toasty hazelnut character of mature Sémillon. Not unlike examples from the Hunter Valley even though they start out much leaner than these wines. Terrific length. (JH) 13.4% Drink 2013 – 2029.

Although the estate has been in existence since 1776, it wasn’t until talented young winemaker, Marc Kent, bought the property back in 1993 that Boekenhoutskloof started to see its stock rise; in the last decade the estate has twice been voted Winery of the Year by distinguished South African journalist John Platter. Restoring the vineyard to its former glory, the new owners established plantings of European varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Grenache. While Boekenhoutskloof is better known for its exceptional red wines, the estate also produces a sumptuous white from old vine Sémillon, as well as a few cases of their Noble Late Harvest – a celestial sweet wine made in the mould of a Sauternes.Read less

Region

Franschoek

Modest in size, but big in stature, the Franschhoek region of South Africa has a reputation for producing some of the finest wines in the country. Afrikaans for ‘French corner’, there is a heavy European influence in this small valley, which can be found in the wines produced here. While Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are the main grapes behind Franschhoek’s full-bodied reds, the region also produces some exceptional whites from Semillon, as well as Sauternes-style sweet wines.
