  • Goedhuis, April 2009, Score: 88-90

Deeply purple in colour, this 2008 opens up with a fragrant nose of blackberry, blueberry and red plum. Focused and poised yet juicy and fresh, it is admirably polished making this St. Estèphe a particularly enticing wine. Excellent value.

  • Robert Parker, May 2011, Score: 88

This dark ruby/purple-tinged sleeper of the vintage offers a sweet bouquet of black currants, underbrush, licorice and berry fruit. Medium to full-bodied with excellent depth, good acidity and an endearing roundness, it can be enjoyed now and over the next 8-10 years. Drink: 2011 - 2021

  • Robert Parker, April 2009, Score: 89-91

The strongest effort from this estate in over two decades, the dense ruby/purple-tinged 2008 reveals plenty of structure and tannin as well as gorgeously rich, pure blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with hints of minerals and underbrush. This full, dense St.-Estephe will benefit from several years of bottle age, and should evolve over the following 15 years. Drink: 2009 - 2024

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2009, Score: 17

Particularly dense colour. Spicy, peppery nose with very full, voluptuous fruit - correct - and very mouthfilling. Long. Makes quite a splash. Comforting and pretty classical. Blind, I preferred it to its grander stablemate Ch Lynch Bages.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2009, Score: 87-90

Crushed blueberry and blackberry aromas follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a caressing finish. A nicely crafted wine for the vintage.

Producer

Château les Ormes de Pez

This Cru Bourgeois was named after the elm trees (ormes) which were originally found around the village of Pez in St.-Estèphe. The property has been in the Cazes family (of Lynch Bages fame) for several generations and as such is handled similarly to its illustrious Pauillac sibling. Due to its impressive track record for consistency and its grounded pricing sense, it is remains one of the best values in Bordeaux.

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
