  • Robert Parker, February 2009, Score: 89

A soft, fleshy, up-front styled Pauillac that will provide delicious drinking over the next 10-15 years, the 2006 Haut-Bages Liberal is dark ruby/purple in color and exhibits notes of licorice, roasted herbs, black currants, and plums. It is a sexy, round, silky-textured wine that seems something of an "outlier" in this tannic vintage. Drink: 2009 - 2024

  • Robert Parker, April 2007, Score: 89-91

A potential sleeper of the vintage, the 2006 Haut-Bages-Liberal exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue, plenty of intense creme de cassis fruit, notions of roasted herbs, underbrush, and licorice, moderate tannins, oodles of sweet fruit, and a layered mouthfeel. It should drink well for 15+ years. Drink: 2007 - 2022

  • Jancis Robinson, May 2007, Score: 17

Very dark crimson. Lift, even slight volatility, on the nose. Round, wonderful texture what a lot of effort has gone into this. Fully ripe fruit. Quite distinguished. [Couldn't help thinking thismust be Pichon Longueville.] Super glossy the opposite of rustic. Positively slides over the palate. Is there quite enough in the middle? It's certainly very distinguished. Just slightlyhollow in the middle. [Yet again, HBL shows especially well en primeur]

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
