  • Goedhuis, January 2008

Tight and concentrated, Nicolas' Bonnes Mares is a bundle of energy with nowhere yet to go. A fewyears in the cellar will entice its lush, sappy fruit to make an appearance. Excellent potential. Drink 2011 - 2023.

  • Burghound, January 2008, Score: 91-93

A marginally riper nose of spicy red and blue berry fruit that is notably spicy and pure and actually quite elegant as are the sleekly muscled, rich, full, sweet and somewhat surprisingly, rather forward flavors that possess excellent length but not quite the same depth. To be sure, this is really a lovely wine, just not a truly profound one. (91-93)/2014+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2008, Score: 18.5

Rather shy a first but with an underlying fruit purity on the edge of its seat that bursts onto the palate with fresh intensity and a long spicy finish. Drink 2012 - 2022.

Nicolas grew up amongst the vineyards of Domaine de la Pousse d'Or where his father was winemaker and part owner for years. Unfortunately, Burgundy vineyards cost more than gold, so when Nicolas decided to set out on his own, he realised that the only feasible way would be to buy grapes from other producers and work as a négociant. He differs from others in the region in that most of his grapes now come from only 8 domaines that he manages himself. As a result, he is able to grow the grapes according to his specifications. Being a perfectionist, his parameters include organic farming methods as well as notably small yields.Read less

Region

Bonnes Mares

Perched between Morey-St-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny in the heart of the Cotes de Nuits this Grand Cru appellation can balance the best characteristics of both. Bonnes Mares wines combine fragrance and femininity with body and power. A seductive combination indeed.
