As elegant and fine as the aromatic profile of the Taillepieds is, this is even more elegant with the classic rose petal and mineral-infused nose that gives way to wonderfully transparent, pure and stunning focused middle weight flavors that are linear, vibrant and suffused with that particular limestone and chalk quality of all great Clos des Ducs. This is not the most concentrated example that I have seen of this wine but it is genuinely one of the most refined and elegant, which when you consider that these traits are the Ducster's stock in trade, that's saying something! Drink: 2012+.Comments: don't miss! Outstanding!

An elegant, fine and pure nose offers up the classic dried rose petal and mineral-infused aromatic profile gives way to wonderfully transparent and strikingly focused middle weight flavors that are linear, vibrant and suffused with that particular limestone and chalk quality of all great Clos des Ducs. This is not the most concentrated example that I have seen of this wine but it is genuinely one of the most refined and elegant, all wrapped in a slightly edgy finish that should round out with time in bottle. Note that while this will undoubtedly hold well in the cellar like virtually all vintages of Clos des Ducs, I would probably be inclined to drink this over the first 10 to 15 years of its life.

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
