  • Goedhuis, May 2005, Score: -

Englishman Christian Seely is doing a fine job at Ch Pichon Baron, once again making wines that rival Pichon Lalande on the opposite side of the road. The style could not be more different however. This is a wine of exotic generosity and sweetness with great depths of dark savoury fruit. All this is contained in very stylish oak that make the wine very flattering indeed. Drink 2012-2025

  • Robert Parker, June 2007, Score: 93

An undeniable star of the vintage, Pichon-Baron's 2004 boasts an inky/ruby/purple color to the rimas well as a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, chocolate, black currant jam, truffles, and charcoal embers. Soft tannin, full body, and abundant opulence and flesh are atypical for the vintage character, but this wine is loaded. Pure, ripe, and evolved, it should be at its finest between 2009-2022.

  • Robert Parker, June 2006, Score: 89-92

One can't say enough about the terrific job manager Christian Seeley is doing at Pichon LonguevilleBaron. The 2004 possesses a dense ruby/purple color, a classic nose of creme de cassis, licorice, graphite, and smoke, an elegant, medium to full-bodied style, crisp acidity, and freshness and definition reminiscent of a down-sized 1996. This well-made Pauillac should be at its finest between 2008-2020.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2005, Score: 16.5

Broad, toasty nose. But a little bit dilute on the palate and then pretty astringent tannins. Not the most harmonious blend. Good acidity though. Drink 2014-2019

Producer

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Along with Pichon Lalande, this estate was only one of two Pauillacs to be classified as a secondgrowth in 1855. They have rivalled each other ever since. However, Pichon Baron has remained inthe shadow of its more illustrious neighbour often enabling it to provide good value for money.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
