  • Goedhuis, May 2005, Score: -

The success story at Branaire Ducru continues. This splendid Chateau with 50 hectares on the St Julien-Beychevelle plateau is ideally sited to make excellent wine. It also enjoys one of the most modern cellars in the region. The wine itself was tight and strict when we tasted it but clearly has plenty of fruit that will be enhanced by the barrel over the next 12 months or so. Drink 2012-2022

  • Robert Parker, June 2007, Score: 90

Possessing the finest aromatics of all the 2004 St.-Juliens, Branaire Ducru offers complex licorice, cranberry, boysenberry, and floral notes interwoven with notions of plums and figs. This dark ruby/purple-tinged, medium-bodied, elegant effort offers sweet fruit as well as ripe tannins. Give it 1-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 14 -15. Drink 2008-2023

  • Robert Parker, June 2006, Score: 90-93

Always a distinctive, fragrant St.-Julien offering a complex concoction of raspberries, cassis, violets, and minerals, the 2004 Branaire's vibrant aromatics are accompanied by a dense ruby/purplecolor, medium body, plenty of fruit, sweet, well-integrated tannin, and a gracious, flavorful yet concentrated style. Enjoy this layered, classic effort between 2008-2020.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2005, Score: 14.5

Low-key, relatively simple elderberry nose. Fresh, lively however. Not trying awfully hard. Pretty green tannins on the finish. Very hard, and rather unrewarding, work.

Like most Médoc wines, the core of the blend is Cabernet Sauvignon and intensive work in the vineyard ensures optimum ripeness. Château Branaire Ducru aims for a balance of elegance and complexity - a trend which has been apparent since 1989, the vintage after its current owner, Patrick Maroteaux, purchased the château.Read less

Region

St Julien

St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
