  • Goedhuis, April 2008

Giampaolo's straight Barolo is produced from the lower slopes of Marenca and Margheria. This 2004offers a full-bodied palate and attractive flavours of cinnamon, crunchy cherry and sweet blackberry. Mineral and refined yet still powerful. An incredible 'village-level' Barolo. Highlyrecommended. 2011 - 2022+.

  • Wine Advocate, December 2007, Score: 88

The 2004 Barolo is a big, powerful wine. Today it comes across as quite austere, and I am not sure the fruit will ever emerge from underneath the wine's imposing structure. If it does, this bottling will merit a higher score but for now the balance seems to be missing. Pira's Barolo is aged in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.

Luigi Pira

Like many present day winemakers in Piedmont, after years of selling grapes and bulk wine, the Pirafamily decided to go it alone. In 1990 they began producing their own label wine from their 8-hectare vineyard. Hiring renowned oenologist, Beppe Caviola, was one of their first steps. Particularly as our Italian and Gianpaolo's English are extremely limited. Yet, like most cross cultural love affairs, ourcommunication just seems to work. Wine really does work magic in more ways than one.Read less

Region

Barolo

With Brunello in Tuscany, Barolo is undoubtedly Italy's finest wine producing region. Located in Piedmont in the north west of Iataly Barolo is comprised of 5 major communes - Barolo, Monteforte d'Alba, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba - though the latter three tend to represent the main styles of the region. The wines are compelling and polished - an exemplary expression of the Nebbiolo grape. DOCG law requires a minimum ageing of 2 years in cask or barrel yet can be longer depending on the producer. Barolos are generally released four or more years after the vintage.
