Burghound, January 2004, Score: 88
The strong wood spice the cask sample displayed has receded to the background with round, rich, powerful flavors that are delicious but the wood acts to round them off. In short, this is perfectly pleasant and to be sure, the power and complexity are appealing but the absence of definition prevents this from ascending to the next level. Drink: 2007-2013.

Burghound, January 2003, Score: 87-90
2001 Bonnes Mares: This too displays abundant wood spice with round, rich, powerful flavors that are presently dominated by the vanilla and smoky character of the oak. Elegant and relatively fine for Bonnes Mares but it is not clear that the wood will ever completely integrate. To be sure, there is good underlying material here but this is not likely to appeal to those who prefer less wood in their Burgundies. (87-90)/2009-15

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: parents Christine and Philippe, and children Caroline and Nicolas. They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Bonnes Mares
Perched between Morey-St-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny in the heart of the Cotes de Nuits this Grand Cru appellation can balance the best characteristics of both. Bonnes Mares wines combine fragrance and femininity with body and power. A seductive combination indeed.
