Producer

Domaine Frederic Albaret

Based in the wilds of the Haut-Languedoc, Frédéric Albaret runs this 20 hectare estate, making concentrated, powerful wine, from a blend of Rhône grape varieties. He is devoted to his vines, but relaxed with his vinification - letting the quality of the grapes come through.

Region

Faugères

Forming part of the Languedoc in southern France, Faugères used to be known for just eau-de-vie and fortified Muscat. However, since the 1950s there has been a progression towards fine red wine made from Mediterranean grape varieties, mainly Carignan (traditionally vinified by carbonic maceration in an effort to soften it) with increasing proportions of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre or Cinsault. These big, southern reds have a deep colour and are spicy, like southern Rhone reds, but also have the wild and rustic charm of the south west. Small amounts of dry, fruity rosé wines are produced from the same grape varieties and white grape varieties include Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne among others.
