  • Robert Parker, February 2003, Score: 91

Wine Advocate #145 (Feb 2003) Robert Parker 91 points Drink 2005-2016The most concentrated and potentially longest-lived cuvee is the Chante Le Merle. The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is peppery, garrigue, lavender, black cherry, currant, and new saddle leather-scented and flavored. It possesses a deep plum/ruby color, serious concentration, loads of rich fruit, plenty of spice, and a provocative perfume of roasted herbs, licorice, mincemeat, and black fruits. This full-bodied 2000 is softer than the 2001, but 1-2 years of cellaring is warranted. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2016. Prices for the Boiron family wines remain among the most reasonable in Chateauneuf du Pape ... remarkable given the high quality of all three cuvees, and the fact that this family has been making Chateauneuf du Pape for five generations.

Producer

Les Bosquet des Papes

The Boiron family has made wine here since 1860. Through purchasing of land over the years, the property today has about 40 different parcels in the appellation - totalling 27ha. The average age of the vines is about 50 years. 3.5ha of 100 year-old vines are used for Cuvée Chante le Merle.

Region

Châteauneuf du Pape

The emperor of southern Rhône appellations, Châteauneuf du Pape was the first A.O.C. in all of France, created in 1936. Their bottle is unique embossed with the papal coat of arms. Thirteen varieties (14 if Grenache Blanc is counted separately) can be incorporated in the blend. The reds include: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, Terret Noir, Picpoul, Vaccarèse, Counoise, Muscardin, while the whites are Roussanne, Bourboulenc and Clairette. Only a handful of producers use all 13, Grenache often being the highest percentage of the blend. This enables each producer to highlight the varieties that are the ripest and most interesting in any given year. Most Châteauneuf du Pâpes are master examples of wines that can be approachable within the first few years of release yet able to develop superb complexity during many years of cellaring.
