Burghound, January 2001, Score: 93-95
Practically black with a supersaturated multidimensional nose of black cherries, spice and trace of new oak. Bigger and larger scaled than the St.-Vivant, it is the richest, most robust wine in this lineup with decidedly muscular tannins. The recent racking has hardened this some but I have every confidence this will develop into a real showstopper. Drink: 2015-2030.

Burghound, May 2010, Score: 96
This hasn't budged much since it was bottled and remains almost black with a notably ripe multidimensional nose of black cherries, spice and earth that complements well the broad-shouldered and impressively scaled medium weight plus flavors that are robust and overtly muscular where the finish retains a sense of robust power and stunning length. At age 11 the '99 Richebourg is clearly signaling that it's going to require 20 to 25 years to really be at its peak. At the same time, there is sufficient mid-palate sap to at least make it approachable sooner, perhaps in 7 to 10 years from now. One of the great vintages for this fabled wine. Many, and consistent, notes. Drink: try from 2017+.

Burghound, October 2002, Score: 95
Practically black with a supersaturated multidimensional nose of black cherries, spice and trace of new oak. Bigger and larger scaled than the RSV and much more linear and direct, it is the richest, most robust wine in this lineup with decidedly muscular tannins. The flavor profile is somewhat austere yet the length is phenomenal and this could be the longest lived wine among these in '99. This has as much potential as any DRC Richebourg I've ever had. Drink: 2015+.

Co-owned by the Villaine and the Leroy/Roch families, this historic domaine in the Côtes de Nuits produces arguably the world’s greatest wine and has become the standard against which all others are judged. It is named after its flagship vineyard, the famous monopole La Romanee-Contée which was first planted by the monks from the Abbaye de Saint Vivant in the Middle Ages and came into the possession of the Prince of Conti in 1760 who kept the wines solely for his own private consumption. The vines were replanted in 1947 and before that remained untouched since pre-phylloxera days. The domaine acquired its other monopole, La Tâche in 1933 and also built up significant holdings in other grand cru vineyards over the 19th and 20th century such as Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux and Le Montrachet. Incredibly, all the wines produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are from vineyards classified as Grand Cru, the highest designation available in Burgundy.Read less
