Burghound, July 2011, Score: 94
(With thanks to Dr. Reed Day). The heavy wood spice that dominated the concentrated black fruit from cask has now largely, if not completely, been absorbed and leads to round, sexy, seductive, earthy, nicely rich and detailed flavors of excellent intensity and fine length. This is still relatively primary though the depth is slowly emerging and while it will undoubtedly be a long term cellar candidate, it should be close to its majority in another 7 to 10 years. Note that I have upgraded my view of this wine considerably as I was not at all sure that it could successfully integrate this much wood but indeed it has. Tasted several times recently with consistent results. Drink: try from 2014+.

Burghound, April 2002, Score: 91
Tasting note: Heavy wood spice presently dominates the fruit and leads to round, sexy, seductive, earthy, nicely rich and detailed flavors of excellent intensity and fine length. As of yet, this has developed no nuance at all and it's frankly a bit one-dimensional and it will be interesting to see if the wine can successfully integrate this much oak. To be sure, there is good underlying material and certainly a fine track record behind the wine plus a demonstrated ability to age even in less than stellar vintages but this is presently displaying more wood than I personally can sign up for. Emmanuel Rouget is one of Burgundy's greatest wine makers who also owns some of the region's finestvineyards. A man of reticent nature, he is reflective and sensitive, yet with some gentle persuasion, he is happy to discuss his wines, his vineyards and his winemaking. His uncle was the late great Henri Jayer from whom he had learned enormously. In fact, Emmanuel had been tending Henri's vineyards and making his wines when his uncle retired in 1991. But he also hasbeen making his own wines since 1985 with his own parcels of vines some of which border those of Henri. His style is not dissimilar to his uncle's. They are pure, old fashioned and complex with a streakof undeniable wildness. They are often difficult to taste from barrel, but with time, their pedigree reveals itself.Read less

Echézeaux
One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Relatively large and consequently diverse for a Grand Cru, the better Echézeaux wines undoubtedly deserve this status. As always in Burgundy vineyard location and grower is critical.
