Robert Parker, April 2002, Score: 89
Elegant vanillin, black cherry, and smoky notes emerge from this textured, medium-bodied 1999. It has a dense ruby/purple color as well as an enormous, concentrated, finesse-styled personality. It is not a blockbuster, but it is a beautifully symmetrical, pure, ripe, well-balanced Troplong Mondot that will benefit from two years of cellaring and age gracefully for 14-15 years. Drink: 2002 - 2017.

Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 89-91
Far better than I suggested last year, this dense blue/purple-colored 1999 reveals notes of licorice, blueberries, vanillin, and smoke, as well as a rich, medium-bodied, concentrated mid-palate. While the tannin is moderately high, it is sweet and balanced by the wine's concentrated, highly-extracted style. The wine is atypical for a 1999 in its backwardness and obvious structure. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 85-86
As an enthusiastic admirer of Madame Christine Valette's brilliant work at Troplong-Mondot, I regret to write that the 1999, tasted on three occasions, is uninspiring. The dark ruby color is followed by attractive smoky, black cherry, and mineral aromas, but the wine is soft, diffuse, and lacks concentration. Although elegant, it does not possess the persistence, richness, and multiple layers of concentration and complexity readers have come to expect from Troplong-Mondot. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2012.

Jancis Robinson, December 2001, Score: 16/20
Scent of foxgloves and green undergrowth. Thick textured, very solid. Great future with very heavy charge of ripe tannins. Drink 2007-2017

Château Troplong Mondot
Located on a limestone plateau overlooking Pavie, Troplong Mondot has become one of the most sought after châteaux in all of Bordeaux. It has consistently been making quality wines for years. It is this dedication that has set it apart from some of its flashier peers.Region
St Emilion
South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
