Robert Parker, April 1997, Score: 88-90
Probably the finest Cantemerle I have tasted since the 1983, this dark purple-colored wine is a quintessentially elegant example of a young Medoc. The attractive, moderately-endowed bouquet of sweet black fruits and flowers is generously dosed with oak, but the overall impression is a floral, fruity combination. There is fine depth, good richness, and a sense of lightness, harmony, and silkiness. The supple, mature nature of the tannin suggests this wine will be both delicious and complex at an early age, but keep for 15-20 years. This is an enticing, stylish wine. Drink: 1997-2017.

Robert Parker, February 1998, Score: 87-90
A fine effort from Cantemerle, the deep ruby/purple-colored 1996 exhibits an excellent mulberry, jammy cranberry, and currant-scented nose with floral characteristics and high quality vanillin. In the mouth, the wine reveals rich, sweet, ripe fruit on the attack, fine density, moderate tannin, and obvious balance. It will require 5-6 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.

Robert Parker, April 1999, Score: 87
I had hoped this wine would turn out closer to outstanding, but it is an excellent Cantemerle, if not quite as stunning as I had expected. The wine offers a dark ruby color, and a sweet nose of black raspberries, subtle new oak, and acacia smells. There is fine sweetness and solid tannin in this elegant, symmetrical wine. It is more forward and lighter than it was from cask, but it is a stylish example of Cantemerle. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2015.

Despite its classic claret spirit, it has an unusual connection to vineyards thousands of miles away. In the early 1980s, much of Cantemerle's Cabernet Franc was changed to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot by top grafting. Mexican viticulturalists, specialists in this field, were flown in from the Napa Valley to carry out the procedure. Quite an extraordinary project for a ‘mere' Haut Médoc.Read less
Region
Haut-Médoc
The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
