  • Robert Parker, April 1996, Score: 87-90

The 1995 exhibits a deep, dark ruby color, a ripe, smoky nose of minerals and black-raspberries and cherries. With its Burgundian-like (Richebourg?) nose, sweet, round flavors, excellent concentration, low acidity, and no hard edges to be found, this will make another tantalizing, silky-textured La Conseillante for drinking during its first decade of life. Beware of anyone who compares it with the exquisite 1990 and 1989.All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux. Drink: 1996-2006.

  • Robert Parker, February 1997, Score: 89-91

One of Bordeaux's most compellingly seductive wines, La Conseillante's early charm can lead tasters to believe that the wine will not age. However, top vintages of La Conseillante can age for two decades, but they are often drunk immediately after bottling because of their expressive aromatics, velvety texture, and delicious fruit. La Conseillante's 1995 is dark ruby-colored with purple hues. It offers up a sweet, smoky, toasty, raspberry, cherry liqueur-scented nose that is impossible to resist. This medium-bodied, beautifully crafted, pure, ripe, generously-endowed wine possesses some tannin, but its flamboyant fruit and aromatics suggest early maturity, as well as 10-15 years of cellaring potential. It falls just short of being an outstanding effort for this chateau. Drink: 1996-2006.

  • Robert Parker, February 1998, Score: 89

It is tempting to give this wine an outstanding score because of its seductiveness. However, I do not think it possesses quite the level of extract and concentration to merit an exceptional rating. Nevertheless, it is an extremely pleasing style of claret. The deep ruby color is followed by an open-knit, black cherry, raspberry, and smoky, roasted herb-scented nose. There is round, lush, ripe fruit, medium body, exceptional elegance and purity, and a soft, velvety-textured finish. Think of it as liquid charm and silk. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2014.

Producer

Château la Conseillante

Many experts consider this an atypical wine, often more reminiscent of grand cru red Burgundy than a heavy weight Pomerol. Its exceptional terroir places it on the Pomerol/St. Emilion border surrounded by Cheval Blanc, Vieux Château Certan, L'Evangile and Pétrus.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
