ORNELLAIA

Ornellaia is an undisputed icon of Italian wine. We are delighted to have been in direct partnership with Ornellaia since 2021. Since its first commercial vintage in 1985, Ornellaia has been pivotal in shaping Italy’s fine wine landscape, creating wines from ‘unsanctioned’ varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that were too good to ignore. These rebellious estates were nicknamed the ‘Super Tuscans’. In 1992 the legal system yielded, and a new designation was created to acknowledge these magnificent wines.

1st September brings the much-anticipated release of the fantastic 2021 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia. We are proud to work directly with this benchmark Super Tuscan estate and to offer the sought-after second wine from the prestigious Ornellaia stable. 2021 is possibly the finest rendition of Le Serre Nuove yet, with the vintage receiving some its highest ever scores from the critics, and at under £48 per bottle IB offers phenomenal value compared to many of its Bordeaux peers.

A TUSCAN JEWEL

Ornellia’s prestigious vineyards lie just a few kilometres inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea, nestled in the foothills near Bolgheri. Languorous, warm Tuscan summers are balanced by both the altitude and cooling coastal breezes that drift inland across the vines, bringing intense ripeness and perfect harmony in wines of jaw dropping finesse and complexity.

The Bordeaux varietals planted here thrive in the marine, alluvial and volcanic soils, with ancient olive and cypress trees standing guard amongst the vines. The beauty, poise and breathtaking intensity of Ornellaia’s wines have made them some of the most collectable in the world.

ORNELLAIA'S WINES

Ornellaia are masters in the art of blending. Their reds bring Tuscan warmth and depth to the classically elegant Bordeaux varieties that dominate the vineyards. The jewel in their crown is the eponymous Ornellaia cuvée, renowned worldwide for its exquisite expression of Super Tuscan precision and flair. This flagship cuveé is flanked by magnificent second wine Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, regularly outscoring its Bordelais peers, and the fabulous Le Volte dell'Ornellaia, an outstanding value third wine perfect for immediate drinking.

Ornellaia's winemakers show just how deliciously complex, vibrant and ageworthy white Tuscan wines can be. Their flagship white, Ornellaia Bianco, is the sister cuveé to Ornellaia and is made with the same meticulous attention to detail and artful approach to blending. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc led wine of perfectly judged elegance, sure to reward any discerning collector. Ornellaia Bianco's second wine is the gorgeous Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia, a superb blend of Sauvignon Blanc with local varietals bringing seductive aromatics to a delightfully quaffable wine.

THE REDS

ORNELLAIA | The estate’s celebrated flagship wine from their top vineyards, situated up to 100 metres above sea level. Typically a blend of individually vinified parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot abd Cabernet Franc, spending around a year in oak barrel before final blending and further ageing to perfectly integrate the blend. The finishing touch for each vintage is a beautiful, limited edition label, designed by world-class artists, that adorns one bottle in each case.

LE SERRE NUOVE DELL'ORNELLAIA | Le Serre Nuove is Ornellaia’s little brother and one of the world’s most thrilling, sought after second wines. Sourced from younger vines across the 115 hectare estate, the 2019 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
and Petit Verdot. Winemakers Axel and Olga demonstrate the same attention to detail in the
vineyard and winery for Le Serre Nuove as they do for the Grand Vin. It sees an 18 month elevage in barrel, 25-30% new oak.

LE VOLTE DELL'ORNELLAIA | The estate’s third wine delivering an approachable, early drinking ‘Super Tuscan’ blend. The different varietals are fermented separately in small steel tanks to maintain their varietal characteristics. The wine is aged partly in barriques used previously for Ornellaia and partly in concrete tanks, to obtain the perfect balance between tannic structure and an expression of fresh fruit.

THE WHITES

ORNELLAIA BIANCO | Ornellaia’s spectacular, terroir-driven and incredibly rare flagship white from three small north-facing vineyards. Predominantly Sauvignon Blanc, the cuvée also includes a portion of Viognier to bring breadth, weight and even more delicious fruit intensity. Hand-harvested in the early hours of the morning and immediately cooled on arrival in the cellar to keep the aromatic potential intact, the grapes undergo barrique fermentation, followed by extended ageing on the lees.

POGGIO ALLE GAZZE DELL'ORNELLAIA | Ornellaia’s outstanding second white wine owes its elegant Mediterranean style, firm structure, ripe fruit and great finesse, to the estate’s unique microclimate. Typically comprised of Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, Viognier and Verdicchi. Fermentation in barriques, 25% new and 25% used, in steel tanks and in concrete eggs. This is a wine of complex aromatic intensity, excellent weight, balanced by a lively freshness.

Ornellaia's approach to winemaking is an uncompromising pursuit of excellence. Every cuvée, every vintage is treated with meticulous attention to detail, with the aim of producing the finest possible expression of terroir and giving the best possible reflection of the vintage. Winemaker Olga Fusari and Estate Director Axel Heinz have paved a veritable renaissance at this estate, elevating the already illustrious quality of this estate to even greater levels. Different vineyard plots and varietals all undergo individual fermentation, with exhaustive tasting and carefully chosen fermentation and maturation vessels, from new French oak to concrete, ensuring they reflect the best characteristics of the vintage.

Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista

Each vintage of Ornellaia is encapsulated by the winemaker in a single word. Recent vintages have been dubbed 'El Vigore', 'La Grazia' and 'Solare'. Since 2009, this word has served as the inspiration for a work of art and a series of limited edition labels for the new vintages. Limited edition large format bottles are individually numbered and personally signed by the artist, many of which are auctioned off in an annual charity event. Since 2019, funds raised have supported the innovative Mind’s Eye program of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. This program helps visually impaired individuals experience art through all their senses through tours, workshops and social activities provided by an educator trained for this particular audience.
