En Primeur | Domaine Rollin Père & Fils
A fourth generation domaine with 14 hectares of vines within the Côte de Beaune and the family’s expansive winery in the village of Pernand Vergelesses. It was founded by Raymond Rollin, a vineyard worker, within the village who slowly accumulated enough vines for his son Maurice to set up his own domaine and bottle under the family name in 1955. Today the estate is assiduously managed by Maurice’s grandson Simon.

Sitting behind the hill of Corton, these vines are positioned within a sheltered combe which offers protection and warmth, ideal for managing temperature fluctuations. Flamboyant on the nose, with notes of frangipane and quince. A full, mouth coating style with an earthy structure. A full and concentrated wine, with excellent length.

It’s funny how the ‘cooler’ vineyards managed to handle the heat and hang onto some semblance of minerality. Les Cloux is always a decent wine in the Rollin cellar, but in 2022, it showed ravishing precocity offset with classic, chalky, P-V minerality. This is a delicious wine, and it represents rare value for money.

Mid yellow. The nose is a little lacking in detail at the moment. On the palate the Cloux offers a greater depth of fruit than the village Pernand but the oak is currently too strong and leaves a much softer feel at the back, as it damps down the expression of acidity. Fair length. I think it will come out of this though. Drink from 2026-2030.

This, the oldest section of vines within the Rollin estate, was planted by Raymond back in 1945. The soil is an excellent representation of the appellation, combining clay and red iron with a firm bedrock of limestone. Charming aromatics of fresh cherry and red fruits. A textured and lush volume on the palate, restrained by a mineral tension and a finish of classic red pinot fruit.

The youngest vines go into village Pernand. A rich deep purple. There is very little nose but there is a suggestion of class, and the oak is well chosen and well-integrated. There is a significant volume of deep dark raspberry fruit, with quite notable tannins behind, but Ile de Vergelesses has a heart to it which was missing in the Fichots. Drink from 2028-2035.
