En Primeur | Domaine Elodie Roy

Vineyards are in Elodie Roy’s blood. She grew up at this 10-hectare domaine developed by her grandfather Robert and father Pierre, in the most southerly appellation of the Côte de Beaune, Maranges. Her eyes light up when she talks about her idyllic childhood enjoying the beauty of her surroundings. After university, realising law and banking were not for her, it wasn’t practical for Elodie to immediately return to the family domaine, so she sought to cut her teeth in wine production elsewhere. She couldn’t have chosen better than 11 years assisting Anne Gros in Vosne Romanée. After such an extraordinary apprenticeship, in 2018 Elodie was eager to return and take over the family estate in her own right.

This is a fine parcel of Pinot Noir, planted in 1963. The vines lie on the edge of the village on clay soil. They have a more northerly exposure, enjoying the sunshine from around 9:00 AM. 20% whole bunch and 20% new oak, striking red fruit flavours of redcurrant and raspberry. Forward drinking with a hint of nutmeg on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 87

The 2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from vines planted in 1965/66 that tend to suffer millerandage, so this is fully de-stemmed and matured in 25% new oak. It has quite a lush and rounded bouquet with red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, open-knit. The palate is fresh and lively, with a dab of sour cherry intermixed with black plum, just a little sharp on the astringent finish. Quite a serious Pinot Noir. Fine. Drinking Window: 2024-2032.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2023, Score: 87-89

All on the same hillside facing north. One plot dates back to 1937 and the rest from the 1960s. Just 20% whole bunch and all raised in wood. A similar pink edged purple colour, just a little more intense than the Hautes Cotes. The nose is more restrained but still shows a quality pinot, then more structure, slightly tough tannins, and good acidity. This will need a couple of years but will emerge at the end very well. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.

This village cuvée comes from lower-lying vineyards bordering the commune of Santenay. For this cuvée Elodie destemmed all the fruit, and it has produced a delectable and charming wine. Morello cherry and blackberry crumble, the vanilla oak gives a coating of sweetness and a subtle tannic tension on the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 87-89

Slightly northern exposure, planted in 1973. All destemmed, and less new wood, deliberately making a distinction between La Rue des Pierres and Le Goty. Mid purple. Not picking up much nose. There is plenty in reserve here, a more austere style, few tannins, coherent though. I think Goty will have more character though, if it refines during the rest of its elevage. Drink from 2025-2028.

Elodie likes to separate this cuvée from vines that sit next to Santenay Clos Rousseau as its individuality of flavours are too dominant to blend with her other parcels. The berries from this site are very small and intense, so she whole cluster vinifies 80% of the fruit. With heaps of dark alpine fruits, the tannins have a firm, granular personality, tremendous density of fruit and a very persistent finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 86-89

Just 8 barrels made from a plot underneath Boutière, planted 1980s with little millerand grapes. 80% whole bunch though Elodie has cut back to 50% for 2023. Sample taken from barrel, to be racked next week. Medium deep purple, not much nose. This is a little bit on the firm side at the moment, without quite the same purity. Hard to see at the moment. Drink from 2025-2029.

This vineyard’s close proximity to the stony, clay soils of Chassagne Montrachet has built it a reputation for white wine. Elodie is one of just a few who are focusing on its ability to make a high-class red from vines planted back in 1952. A very relaxed and gentle style, with open generous summer berry fruits, it is rewardingly succulent, balanced by a supple central tannic core and so much finesse on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 89

The 2022 Santenay Les Gravières 1er Cru comes from old vines planted in 1952/42 and includes 20% whole bunches, 12 barrels produced, of which two are new. The lively bouquet brings black plum and veins of blueberry fruit, lively and generous, scents of potpourri unveiled with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannins. Fresh and quite saline with a sapid finish, it just needs a touch more on the aftertaste. Drinking Window: 2025-2034.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 88-90

Planted in 1952 and 1953: 12 barrels with two new, sampled from the wood. Light to mid purple. Rather prettily perfumed, this is an elegant Santenay made from correctly ripe fruit. This comes in at 13.5%. Sensual, yet correctly structured, with fine-grained tannins. Good wine for the medium plus term. Drink from 2026-2030.
