En Primeur | Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay

In our view this fine domaine is an unsung hero from the village of Chassagne Montrachet. This is in part probably due to its youth, having only been founded in the mid-1980s following the marriage of Philippe Duvernay from Givry in the Côte Chalonaise and Laura Coffinet, a member of one of the most established families in Chassagne. They have created an enviable 7-hectare domaine with unusually all their vineyard holdings exclusively in just one commune, that of Chassagne Montrachet, including some of the finest sites the appellation has to offer.

    The fruit for this excellent cuvée comes from 3 separate plots, one near Puligny, a central parcel and the third Premier Cru Champs Gain. Vanilla pod and unsalted butter intermingle with an earthy terroir core. A relaxed and approachable wine to be enjoyed in its youth.

    Sitting alongside Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru, Bastien and Philippe feel its characteristics are so distinctive and so good that they merit bottling separately to the rest of their village parcels. A charming bouquet of summer flowers, peach and crème caramel. This has depth and nuanced intensity with flavours of nutmeg and sea salt fudge. The textural feeling of dry extract gives further depth and length.

    This warm mid-slope site typically lends itself to making deep and full wines, but tasting from cask this year, it was a little more on the reserve. Fresh lemon juice, sea salt and pink grapefruit adorn a tightly integrated mineral structure, with a fine, long persistence.

    The Clos St Jean vineyard sits high up on the Chassagne hillside and, as a cooler location, one expects a drive of minerality in this wine. A touch broader in character this vintage thanks to the warm summer. Deliciously generous, with notes of melon and apricot. This is rounded and full, but never loses sight of the vineyard’s typical tension, with a long taut finish. Excellent.

    This Premier Cru sits plumb in the middle of the appellation, producing a flamboyant wine. Fresh fruit salad flavours balance ripe exotic fruit. Cream and almond paste on the finish, this is a very pleasing style.

    Fairendes is a lieu-dit within the better known Premier Cru of Morgeot and the Coffinets bottle this plot separately. Bastien feels it is so graceful and poised that its unique quality would be lost if included in their other parcel of Morgeot. Always a favourite of ours, the 2022 is a gem, so full of fresh, lively citrus fruits, deliciously harmonious and balanced, full of poise and so elegant on the finish. Wonderful

The father and son team of Philippe and Bastien have a philosophy of keeping it simple. The fruit arrives from the vineyard in the best condition possible and, instead of the current fashion to cold soak prior to pressing or fermenting, they like to ferment immediately in cask, letting the natural rise in cellar temperature enrich the lees and feed the wine. If required, they operate a very cautious use of bâtonnage on certain cuvées.

  • IN BOND prices exclude UK Duty and VAT. Wines can be purchased In Bond for storage in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse, or for export to non-EU countries. Duty and VAT must be paid before delivery can take place.

  • RETAIL prices include UK Duty and VAT. Wines for UK delivery can only be purchased this way.

  • Duty Paid wines have been removed from Bond and cannot subsequently be returned to Bond.  VAT is payable on Duty Paid wines. These wines must remain Duty Paid but can be purchased as such for storage subject to VAT.
